Guest editors

We are also constantly looking for guest editors who wish to compile a theme issue on a special subtopic in Translational Medicine

This may be particularly interesting for workshop and conference organizers putting together a grant-funded event (eg, with invited experts) on an translatiuonal medicine-related topic. AJTM can then be used as a dissemination vehicle. (Funding through grants or other sources is usually required and should be budgeted for in grant proposals. Letters of support are available from the AJTM editor.

The task of the guest editor(s) is generally to solicit manuscripts from colleagues concerning the selected topic,
to select peer-reviewers for incoming manuscripts,
to make decisions (together with the editorial board) on article revisions and acceptance, and to write an editorial for the theme issue to secure funding to sponsor the AJTM for published papers (usually in the $10-20k range).
Alternately, the abstracts of the conference may be published in a supplement, with selected full papers published later in a theme issue or in regular AJTM issues.

Criteria

Editorial board members must be peers whose judgment is highly regarded within the journal’s main discipline, or their decisions may not be regarded as valid. Publication number and academic aptitude are the top factors for editorial board membership.

Editorial board meetings
Editorial board meetings are useful opportunities to meet with some or all of the editorial board members to brief them on issues, take questions and also gain ideas for policies and upcoming journal editions. They can be done face to face, or via telephone or video conferencing.
We normally organize an Editorial board meeting annually in Hawaii.
Where board meetings are not possible, try to arrange to meet with board members on an individual basis at conferences or other events. Meeting board members is a key way of networking and building and strengthening the relationship with your editorial board.

Responsibilities of the Editorial Board
The Editorial Board should assist in a variety of aspects of running the journal. Their responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):
1. Providing scientific expertise for the journal
2. Submitting articles
3. Administering peer review or serving as a peer reviewer
4. Helping the journal to attract high-quality manuscripts, for example by promoting the journal at relevant conferences
5. Providing feedback and suggesting improvements for the journal
6. Suggesting topics and authors for commissioned reviews and commentaries

Maintaining the Editorial Board
In our policy, an Editorial Board should not be static; it is good practice to review the contributions and performance of each Board member every couple of years, and then take the opportunity to:
1. Restructure the Board, perhaps giving more active members increased responsibility
2. Give less active members the chance to step down, creating vacancies for new members (this is common practice and should not cause offense)
3. Thank all continuing members for their ongoing contributions; you may also wish to ask them to suggest new colleagues who might be suitable for the Board
