Abstract

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical treatment with its unique advantages in anti-inflammatory response. Neuroinflammation is associated with numerous brain injury disorders as well as pain. By summarizing the relevant literature on acupuncture in anti-neuroinflammation, we found that acupuncture is able to modulate the development of neuroinflammation through both direct modulation and indirect modulation based on the gut-brain axis. By enumerating the studies related to anti-neuroinflammatory effects of acupuncture, the potential anti-neuroinflammatory mechanisms of acupuncture are explored with the expectation of contributing to further experimental and clinical trials of acupuncture.
