Author Guidelines

JIS publishes two editions per year, a fall edition published in December with a mid-August to late September submission window, and a spring edition published in April with an early January through mid-February submission window. Research submissions for the spring 2022 edition are now open and will be accepted through Friday, February 4, 2022. Policy briefs can be submitted on a rolling basis throughout the academic year and will be published as they are completed. Guidelines for both submission streams and instructions on how to submit are available below.

JIS Submission Guidelines -- Research Papers

  1. Must be a current SIS graduate student. (Note: alumni submissions may also be considered, upon approval of the JIS Editorial Board).
  2. JIS published rigorously researched academic work, such as SIS term papers. We accept submissions on all topics related to international affairs and international service.
  3. Research papers should have a clear thesis statement that can be easily summarized in a single sentence.
  4. All submissions should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and between 3000 and 6500 words (excluding references). We prefer that submissions be sourced and cited using Chicago-style footnotes. However, papers may be submitted using any citation convention so long as authors are willing to convert to Chicago footnotes prior to publication. Note: Any foreign language references should include an English translation of the source title.
  5. Submissions are accepted twice a year at the start of the fall and spring semesters.

JIS Submission Guidelines -- Policy Briefs

  1. Must be a current SIS graduate student. (Note: alumni submissions may also be considered, upon approval of the JIS Editorial Board).
  2. JIS policy briefs are a shorter-form alternative to our published research papers. They are intended to give SIS graduate students an opportunity to engage with issues of international affairs and international service and propose policy recommendations.
  3. JIS policy briefs should use the following format:
      1. One paragraph Executive Summary clearly outlining the policy problem you’re seeking to address and your key arguments;
      2. Explanation of the policy problem, including historical context, key actors involved, and any societal, economic, cultural, ethical, legal, or other dimensions of the issue;
      3. Your analysis of what makes the policy problem so challenging and why previous attempts to address it have not succeeded;
      4. Policy recommendations on how you would address the issue, aimed at a specific individual or institution (i.e. the U.S. Secretary of State, NATO Secretariat, etc.); and conclusion outlining any limitations to your recommendations or analysis and recommendations for future research.
  4. All submissions should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and between 1000 and 2000 words (excluding references). We prefer that submissions be sourced and cited using Chicago-style footnotes. However, papers may be submitted using any citation convention so long as authors are willing to convert to Chicago footnotes prior to publication. Note: Any foreign language references should include an English translation of the source title.
  5. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
